Muslims in Assam: Muslim population in State crosses 1.06 crore, percentage more than 34%

Assam always had a high Muslim concentration.

The latest Census 2011 report which was released only in 2015, tells that Assam has more than 10 million [1 crore] Muslims.

The exact figure of Muslims in Assam is 1.06 crore in a population of 3.12 crore.

Muslims constitute 34% of Assam's population. Jammu-Kashmir is the only Muslim majority state in India apart from Lakshadweep, a union territory.

Among other States, Assam has the highest percentage of Muslims.

It is followed by West Bengal, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh. In Assam, the highest Muslim population is in Nagaon district.

Of the 27 districts in Assam, nine have Muslim majority i.e. Muslims here comprise more than 50% of the population. The list of the districts that have more Muslims than Hindus, has been included in this blog post.

After Nagaon, Dhubri and Barpeta have both one million Muslims each viz. 15.53 lakh and 11.98 lakh. Other Muslim majority districts of Assam include Karimganj, Morigaon, Darrang, Goalpara, Hailakundi and Bongaigaon.

Muslim population in Karnataka: Bangalore has more than a million Muslims

Karnataka is an important South Indian state and its capital Bangalore, now known as Bengaluru, is one of the major metro cities in the country.

The State has been home to Muslim dynasties in the past. Nawabs of Carnatic ruled this region and a part of Nizam's territory is also in present day's Karnataka.

The population of Muslims in Karnataka is almost identical to the national average.

But it is higher compared to other South Indian states, except Kerala.

In Karnataka, Muslims number around 13% [slightly above 12.9%].

The concentration of Muslims is higher in Gulbarga, Bidar, Bijapur, Bellary, Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum and Mangalore districts apart from small cities and towns.

In big cities, Muslim percentage is not as high, as it is in middle-level cities and towns. Bangalore has more than a million Muslims as per the last census report  [2011].

Population of Bangalore metropolitan city [municipal area, BBMP] is 84.95 lakh
Population of Muslims in Bangalore [BBMP] 11.81 lakh
Percentage of Muslims in Bangalore metro area is 13.9%

Population of Karnataka state is 6.10 crore or 61 million
Muslim population in Karnataka is 78.93 lakh or 7.89 million
Percentage of Muslims in Karnataka is 12.9%

Muslim population in Britain increases, crosses 3 million: UK has 5.4% Muslims now

The population of Muslims has increased to a record 3 million in United Kingdom (UK), say latest estimates.

The figures are at the beginning of the year 2016. The number is 3.1 million, to be precise.

Though earlier estimates [Census 2011 report] had suggested that there were 2.7 million Muslims living in the country, the latest figures show a jump.

The indications are that the figure of 3 million [30 lakh] has been crossed. There are places like Tower Hamlets in East London, which has more than 45.6% Muslims.

Also, Newham has 40.8% Muslims. However, the Muslim community remains a religious minority in the country.

But the presence is going up significantly in England and Wales.Apart from London, there are other cities and towns that have substantial number of Muslims.

They include Blackburn in Lancashire where 29.1% population comprises Muslims. The rise would continue as Muslim population is young.

Also, immigration and asylum seekers would slightly add to the existing number. However, there is no cause for alarm, as Muslim population growth is not astonishing, and would go steady within a few years, to stabilise at around 7%, feel demographers.

Islam in EUROPE:

The largest population of Muslims is in France, which is estimated at 5-7 million.
Germany accounts for the second highest concentration of Muslims at around 5-6 million.
United Kingdom (UK) has now nearly 3.1 million Muslims

Muslim majority countries in Europe:

There are three Muslim majority countries in Europe. They include Bosnia Herzegovina, Albania and Kosova. For a list of countries with Muslim population and percentage in EUROPE, CLICK HERE

Hindus are a minority in eight states of the country: How can India be called an overwhelmingly Hindu majority nation?

Do you know Hindus are a minority in eight states* of the country?

Perhaps, you knew, but you never gave much a thought. It's not your fault.

So many times, the sentence, 'Hindus are the majority community' is repeated that one is likely to accept it on face value.

The fact is that apart from Jammu & Kashmir, Hindus are a minority in seven states and a union territory.

You can't ignore the statistics by saying that some of these states are small and are located in North East.

India has 30 states and six union territories, excluding Delhi. Apart from these eight states, there are other states where Hindus are not the overwhelming majority and are less than 65% of population.

These states include Kerala, Assam & Goa. West Bengal is another state that has less than 75% Hindus. This is the list of states where Hindus are minority (Alpsankhyak)

State                 Percentage of Hindus in population             Minorities percentage

1. Jammu-Kashmir                         28.44%                                      71.56%

2. Punjab                                         38.4%                                       61.6%

3. Mizoram                                     2.75%                                        97.25%

4. Meghalaya                                  11.53%                                      88.47%

5. Arunachal Pradesh                      29%                                          71%

6. Manipur                                      41.39%                                     58.61%

7. Lakshadweep                              2.5%                                          97.5%

8. Nagaland                                    8.75%                                       91.25%

In this table minorities include non-Hindu religions

[Muslims are a majority in Jammu Kashmir and Lakshadweep. Rest of others have Christian majority or a high Buddhist population as in Arunachal Pradesh]
*One is a union territory i.e. Lakshadweep
-----------------------------------------------------------

FIVE OTHER STATES THAT HAVE VERY HIGH MINORITY POPULATION

Minorities are over 45% in Kerala [mostly Muslims, Christians]
Minorities are over 40% in Sikkim [Buddhists, Christians, Muslims, Tribal]
Minorities are 40% in Assam [mostly Muslim and Christian]
Minorities are nearly 35% in Goa [Christian and Muslim]
Minorities are nearly 30% in West Bengal [chiefly Muslims]

Jharkhand a unique state

Jharkhand has 67% Hindus. The non-Hindus include 14.6% Muslims, 4.5% Christians and a huge number of non-Hindu tribals. Non-Hindus in this state are nearly 33%

FOUR MORE STATES THAT HAVE SIGNIFICANT MINORITIES

Three more states Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Chandigarh have 20% or more minority population
Bihar has nearly 18% minority population. Bihar has 1.75 crore or 17.5 million Muslims, calling which a minority is not correct.

UP has even more large Muslim population, almost double of Bihar, and nearly 20% of UP's population percentage terms. The Census was conducted in 2011 and report came out a few years later, but the next census has not been conducted, since then.

-------------------------------------------------------------

India has 36 administrative units including 29 states, six union territories administered by centre and a National Capital Region (NCR) i.e. Delhi.

A. 13 of these units [states and UTs] have minorities in the range of 30-35% population up to 99%]
B. 12 of these units [states and UTs] have more than 40% minorities in India]
C. 17 of these states and UTs have very significant minority population and calling them minority is not proper, as their numbers are so huge.
D. Nearly a dozen states have 10% or more minorities, which also number in millions.
E. Himachal Pradesh, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, are among the three states that have more than 90% Hindu population. They could be termed as 'Hindu states', though Orissa and Chhattisgarh have sizeable Christian and Muslim population and a very high number of minorities in several towns and cities.

Hyderabad has highest Muslim population percentage among major metro cities in India

The latest  census figures have revealed the Muslim population in the country.

The figures show that Hyderabad has the highest Muslim percentage among METROS in the country.

Though there are many other cities [under the population of 10 lakh] that have higher Muslim composition, Hyderabad has the highest Muslim population among big cities.

The maximum number of Muslims in a city in India, is in Mumbai. Delhi and Mumbai have more Muslims than Hyderabad.

But the overall population of Delhi and Mumbai is too huge. Hence, the percentage of Muslim population in these cities, is less. This gives Hyderabad the unique position. Hyderabad was earlier capital of Andhra Pradesh, but after bifurcation, is it capital of Telangana.

As per the Census report, the Muslim population in Hyderabad is 17.13 lakh out of 39.43 lakh.

Population of Hyderabad:                   39.43 lakh
Muslim population in Hyderabad:      17.13 lakh
Percentage of Muslims in Hyderabad:  45%

There are around 2% Christians and 1% Rest, which account for the remaining population. Hindu population in Hyderabad is around 51%. This figure is for the year 2011, but was released only now (in 2015).

Hence, the figures would be higher by now. But these figures would be known in the next census (2021). Till, then, the official figures are 17.13 lakh Muslims in 39.43 lakh population. [This doesn't include the population in suburbs].

The population of Muslims in Telangana is 12.68%. The Muslims now comprise 8.53% of population in Andhra Pradesh. This must be noted that Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated and Telangana was carved out as a separate state.

Percentage wise, Hyderabad comparatively has more Muslims than other metro cities. But it would not be the case, once next Census report is out. There are multiple reasons for this. Trends indicate cities like Malappuram, entering the list of metros. Besides, when it comes to population, Delhi and Mumbai have a much higher Muslim population now.

Muslim population in India exceeds 17.22 crore or 172 million, Census report reveals

After a long wait of four years, the religious population statistics were finally released.

The Census figures on religion are for the year 2011, still, they are important, as they are the official figures.

India's population: 121.09 crore [1.21 billion]

Hindus    96.63 crore   [79.8%[
Muslims  17.22 crore   [14.2%]

Population of Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Jains and other religions
Christian 2.78 crores [2.3 per cent]
Sikh 2.08 crores [1.7 per cent]
Buddhist 84 lakh [0.7 per cent]
Jain 45 lakh (0.4 per cent)

Other religions and persuasions (ORP) 0.79 crores [0.7 per cent]
Religion not stated 0.29 crores [0.2 per cent]

The figure shows that Muslims now account for 14.2% of India's vast population. That's 17.22 crore or 172.2 million. The figures are for 2011, and the number would be much more by now (in the year 2015).

Muslim population in Delhi crosses 20 lakh mark: More than 2 million Muslims in Delhi

The Muslim population in Delhi has crossed the 2 million (20 lakh) barrier.

As per the 2001 census, population of Delhi was 1.675 crore or 16.75 million.

The complete religious population of the census 2011 was not released for four years and has only now been announced (in 2015).

This data includes state wise population of Muslims in India.

The latest census figure reveals that Delhi has  21.6 lakh or 2.16 million Muslims in 2011. Four years have passed and the figure would be even more by now. Though this is not too big a figure, the reality is that crossing 20 lakh mark, is important.

Ten years ago, in 2001 census, the population of Delhi was 1.37 crore or 13.7 million, the Muslim population was then 1.6 million or 16 lakh. So, there has been a 33% rise in Muslim population in India's capital in a decade. At this rate, it would be 3 million or 30 lakh by 2021.

For centuries, Delhi was a predominantly Muslim city but partition of the country, changed its demography. Lakhs of Muslims migrated to Pakistan. This migration continued for decades. As a result, Delhi's Muslim population fell down.

Among the four metros (metropolitan) cities, Delhi's Muslim population and percentage had reached the lowest, even below 5%. But later on, migration from Muslim majority areas of Western Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar, apart from neighbouring Mewat (Haryana) and Rajasthan, increased it.

Other than Old Delhi, there are now dozens of Muslim pockets and neighbourhoods in India's capital. The National Capital Region (NCR) clearly has a visible Muslim presence and it is clear on the streets too.

Delhi was always one of the most important Muslim cities in the world. For nearly 800 years, it was the seat of one of the biggest Islamic empires of the world. Today, the Muslim population in Delhi is growing, on way towards the 25 lakh figure (2.5) million.

NOTE: After Census 2011, no census has been conducted. However, the population of Greater Delhi or Delhi Urban Agglomeration is now estimated at around 33-35 million or 3.3 to 3.5 crore. The Muslim population is around 4.5 million or 45 lakh. However, it will be officially confirmed when Census is again held.

Muslim population in India increases to 14.2% or over 17 crore: State wise population of Muslims in the country

More than 17 crore Muslims in India: Census 2011

The Muslim population of India had increased to 170 million or more than 17 crore in the census 2011, the report of which has been delayed and released in 2015.

The population of Muslims has increased more in states like Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir among the big states.

In the comparatively small states or UT, the Muslim population growth was above average like in Goa, Delhi, Chandigarh and Haryana.

But many states do not have a high Muslim population rise. It is also seen that the Muslim population's growth rate is coming down.

Over 14.2% of India's population is Muslim: Census 2011

States that had medium rate of growth include Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Tripura among others.

Quite surprisingly, the population of Muslims hasn't increased much in Bihar. But compared to the population in 2001 census, their composition in the state has gone up.

The states that have witnessed less increase in Muslim population include Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Orissa.

Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Sikki, Nagaland, Himachal Pradesh and Meghalaya saw increase in Muslim population percent compared to previous decade.

But, Chhattisgarh, Pondicherry, Daman and Diu remained constant, as Muslim population percent in these states hasn't changed since the last census of 2001.

Arunachal Pradesh saw low growth too in North East. Manipur saw negative growth, which means decrease in percentage of Muslims in the State, compared to the last decade's counting of religious population.

India's Muslim population above 200 million or 20 crores!

Map showing Muslim concentration in districts*
Is the population of Muslims in India over 200 million or 20 crores? The US government feels that the Indian Muslims account for more than 13.4% of the country's population.

Times of India report says that US authorities believe that there are many more Muslims in India than are officially stated and there population could be substantially higher than the figure which is generally reported.

The census 2001 suggested that India had 138 million Muslims. But a wikileaks cable revealed that American government feels that this figure may not be accurate and the numbers of Muslim could have been under-reported.

The report further says that Muslim population could be around 180 million or 18 crores in India. But given the fact that the census 2011 report is nearing, the Indian Muslims could now be accounting well over 200 million, as a decade has passed since the last census.

The estimated Muslim population on the basis of around 30% decennial increase in the community in India, takes the figure to230-240 million (23-24 crore) right now, which means that Indian Muslims easily outnumber Pakistani Muslims, and could also be more numerous than Muslims in Indonesia.

This could turn India into the country with the largest Muslim population. It is just a view and an estimate. The real picture will be known when the Census 2011 figures for religions and religious adherents are released in the coming months.

UPDATE: Latest trends indicate a Muslim population in the range of 230 million to 240 million in India in 2025, as per country's population estimate i.e. 1.42 billion or 142 crore.

*The darker the colour, the higher is the percentage of Muslims in the particular district.

Religions in Africa: Muslim population, concentration in countries & percentage

Africa is traditionally concerned the Muslim continent though the rapid rise of Christianity and active missionary work has led to followers of each of the two great Abrahamic religions today claiming higher number of adherents.

Asia is considered the Islamic continent because it has a majority of Muslims, though it has a large Hindu and Buddhist population too. Asia and Africa are the most populated continents in the world.

In fact, Muslims dominate not just Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, Indonesia & Malaysia in the far east except India that has a huge Hindu population [it also has 170 million Muslims[ and China-Japan that have a high Buddhist-Shinto concentration.

However, it was traditionally Africa that was considered homeland for Muslims. The proximity with Saudi Arabia and the expansion of Islamic empire from Egypt to countries across Sahara desert turned Africa a Muslim continent.

Though it continued to have a large population which continued to believe in animism, shamanism and ancestral rituals of worship. Almost all the major countries in Northern part of Africa are dominated by Islam though Southern part is more Christian.

The big countries including Algeria, Morocco, Sudan, Egypt, Libya, Nigeria, Senegal, Niger, Chad, Somalia and Mali are predominantly Muslim with the percentage of Islamic population above 90% in most the countries. Statistics about Ethiopia, formerly Abyssinia, remain disputed though Islam was widely prevalent historically in this country.

Christianity is more popular in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Congo, Angola and Namibia. Though Tanzania, Mozambique, Tanzania and Ivory Coast are countries that also have very high Muslim density in terms of religious population.

Religious population in Africa

Of the around 6.8 billion population of the world, Africa accounts for around 1 billion. Nearly half of 1 billion, viz. 50 million population in Africa profess Islamic faith while Christians are also almost equally distributed. In fact, one or two researches show Christianity slightly ahead though it is disputed.

It is estimated that 45% of Africans profess Islam while Christianity has nearly 40% followers. In some countries Christian population figures have been exaggerated but there is a similar charge against Muslims also in some parts.

After all, the continent remains a battlefield for proselytizers including Muslims and Evangelists. The rest (around 5%) believe in traditional religions, local beliefs & polytheism. Hindus & Jews are found in some cities but there presence in overall population is too less.

Christian majority countries in Africa

Africa has around 50 countries, however, among the big countries that have higher Christian population include Angola, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Congo, Cameroon, Zambia, Rwanda, Cote d' Ivory, Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique and Benin.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa but it has nearly equal Muslims and Christians. Ethiopia is now considered a country where Christians outnumber Muslims but Islam is still strong with over 35% followers. The study of religious distribution suggests that while in North and West Africa Islam dominates, Christianity has more numbers in parts of middle and Southern Africa.

Muslims in Europe: Country-wise population and percentage

Islam is not a new religion for Europe. For over a 1,000 years Muslims have been living in different parts of Europe. During the Ottoman-era Muslims settled in different regions that were spread across Albania, Bulgaria and Austria. In neighbouring countries in Caucasus, Muslims have a strong presence.

But Muslims appeared on the European street in mid-20th century. Later due to immigration from Turkey, North Africa and Asian countries like India, Pakistan & Bangladesh, the percentage of Muslims grew fast after 1980s.
Following is the list of European countries and their estimated 2010 Muslim Population with the percentage of population which professes Islam.

Cities like Belgium's capital Brussels, Malmo Stockholm [Sweden], Amsterdam [Holland], Cologne [Germany], Utrecht and Rotterdam [also Holland], Hague, Denmark's Copenhagen, London, Birmigham, Bradford, Leicester, Luton [UK] have 10-20% Muslim population.

The percentage may be higher in Rotterdam, Malmo, Amsterdam, Brussels and Marseilles where Muslims constitute20-30%. In Paris Muslims are almost 10% but Paris being a metropolitan city, their population is too high. Moscow also has an estimated 20% Muslim citizens.

Muslim countries in Europe

Europe has three Muslim majority nations: Albania [70% Muslim], Bosnia Herzegovina [50%] and Kosova [90%]. Among other countries with large Muslim population is Macedonia [33%], Montenegro [17%], Bulgaria [15%], Cyprus [22%], Georgia [12%] and Russia [12%]. Turkey is considerd in Asian country. Some breakway republics of former USSR including Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan are also Muslim dominated countries but are closer to Asian countries though some consider them as European nations.

For population of Muslims in other countries of Europe. See the table below:

Country Muslim Population Percentage

Austria 475,000 5.7

Belgium 638,000 6.0

Denmark 226,000 4.1

Finland 42,000 0.8

France 3,574,000 5.7

Germany 4,119,000 5.0

Greece 527,000 4.7

Ireland 43,000 0.9

Italy 1,583,000 2.6

Luxembourg 13,000 2.7

Netherlands 914,000 5.5

Norway 144,000 3.0

Portugal 22,000 0.2

Spain 1,021,000 2.3

Sweden 451,000 4.9

Switzerland 433,000 5.7

United Kingdom 2,869,000 4.6

Total: 17,094,000 [17 million]

The rise in Muslim population is not as fast and as dramatic as it is projected. The growth in Muslim population was due to immigration and larger families [more children] but recently the birth rate has fallen among Muslims and their population is not increasing as speedily as right-wing parties, politicians and press claim.

All European countries' figures are not mentioned in the above list.

Muslim majority district in North India

Apart from Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), there is no state in North India that has over 20% Muslim population.

But the lone Muslim-majority district exists not in UP, which has a strong Muslim concentration in Oudh and Rohailkhand. Instead, the district is located in Haryana. Mewat that has a population of nearly 1 million or 9.9 lakh has over 70% Muslims.

Though Haryana has just 6% Muslims, the Mewat region has a predominant Muslim population. In the year 2005, Mewat was constituted as the 21st district of the state. Earlier it was part of the Gurgaon district, which is close to Delhi.

Mewat is populated by Meos (Mev) who for centuries remained Muslims but also followed Hindu practices. This area was a battle field between Shuddhi movement workers and the Tablighi Jamaat activists before and after independence.

While Uttar Pradesh has around 19% Muslims followed by Bihar (17%), Rajasthan (8%), Madhya Pradesh (7%), Delhi (12%), the lone district that has such a large Muslim population exists in Haryana. UP's Rampur has also nearly 50% Muslims.

Bihar's Kishanganj has even higher percentage but geographically it lies in Eastern India, on the border of West Bengal state. Mewat has been a backward region and educational levels are low here. Efforts are on to improve literacy rate in this district.

UPDATE: This is an old post. After Census 2011, which was conducted and its report was released a few years later, Uttar Pradesh also has been a state with Muslim majority district--Rampur. Smaller districts that were created later, also have a high Muslim population, but no Census was conducted after 2011.

Indian cities with highest Muslim population: Population and percentage in major Indian cities, metros and towns

The distribution of Muslim population in India is a unique demographic phenomenon.

Though Muslims form nearly 14% of India's vast population, they are a highly urbanized religious community.

Scattered across the length and breadth of country, Muslims are present in large numbers in North, the Indo-Gangetic belt, Eastern region and parts of South India.

Among big Indian cities, the highest Muslim percentage is in Hyderabad (40%). If State capitals are included then, Sri Nagar (90%), Bhopal (35%) and Lucknow (30%) also have a predominantly Muslim character.

In Kerala, Kozhikode which was earlier known as Calicut also has more than 35% Muslim population. Maharashtra's Aurangabad has over 40% Muslim concentration.

Muslim population in Metro Cities

When we talk of metros, Mumbai has the highest percentage (22%), followed by Kolkata (21%) and Delhi (around 15%). Bangalore (Bengaluru)  has 14% Muslims. Chennai has slightly less Muslim population at around 10%.

If middle-level cities are  included in the list, then the list will go far. Aligarh has 40% Muslim population. Meerut has around 32% Muslims. Kanpur and Allahabad have around 22-25% Muslim presence. Varanasi is also close.

Some of the cities with nearly 30% Muslims include Karnataka's Bidar, Gulbarga, Hubli-Dharwad, Maharashtra's Parbhani, Nanded, Nalanda (Bihar), Bhagalpur and Firozabad. There are many such cities in different states of India.

Muslim majority Cities

In cities with population between 0.5-1 million (5-10 lakh), some cities have a clear Muslim majority. They include Moradabad, Malegaon and Bhiwandi.

In Cities that have a population between 1,00,000 to 5,00,000, the number of such cities is even more. There are dozens of such cities from Rampur to Mau in UP, Burhanpur in MP. There are many cities and towns under 1 lakh population that have a clear Muslim majority population (over 50%).

Dearborn in US: A Muslim majority City in United States of America

America may still not have a large Muslim population but there are cities and towns where Muslims comprise a sizeable chunk of population.

Dearborn is one such city that has nearly 40% Muslim population and this is growing fast.

Dearborn, which is located in Michigan state, is part of Detroit metropolitan area.

It has one of the highest concentration of Muslims among cities in the country.

Muslim Population in India: Percentage in States and Metropolitan Cities

India ranks second in terms of Muslim population in the world.

Muslims are in majority in Jammu & Kashmir state and Lakshadweep [earlier Laccadives].

They comprise around 33% of the population in Assam, just over 25% in West Bengal and more than 24% in Kerala.

For almost a thousand years Muslim kings ruled India but the population of Muslims is most in regions where the Mughals and other Muslims kings had no influence.

Kerala and Assam are such states. Uttar Pradesh (19%) and Bihar (16%) also have large Muslim population.

In States, highest population of Muslims is in Uttar Pradesh or UP that has 35 million or 3.5 crore Muslims.

Bihar is second. Maharashtra has more than 10 million Muslims. 6arnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Jharkhand have strong presence of Muslims.

In percentage terms Kashmir has 70% Muslims.

Mumbai has 25 lakh or 2.5 million Muslims while Kolkata, Delhi and Hyderabad have more than one million Muslims each.

In states Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Orissa and Chhattisgarh have relatively less Muslim population but in  cities in all these states also the mosques and madarsas are a common sight.

UPDATE: The last census was conducted in 2011. Its report on religion wise data was released in 2015. Census was not conducted in 2021. However, it is estimated that Delhi and Mumbai both have around 4.5-5 million Muslims now in the year 2025.

This is because of the huge growth of these cities. Also, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Malappuram each have more than 3 million Muslims. Sri Nagar, Bengaluru and Ahmedabad follow them. The traditional Islamic centres like Lucknow and Bhopal, along with Kozhikode, come next.
