Muslim population in Britain increases, crosses 3 million: UK has 5.4% Muslims now

The population of Muslims has increased to a record 3 million in United Kingdom (UK), say latest estimates.

The figures are at the beginning of the year 2016. The number is 3.1 million, to be precise.

Though earlier estimates [Census 2011 report] had suggested that there were 2.7 million Muslims living in the country, the latest figures show a jump.

The indications are that the figure of 3 million [30 lakh] has been crossed. There are places like Tower Hamlets in East London, which has more than 45.6% Muslims.

Also, Newham has 40.8% Muslims. However, the Muslim community remains a religious minority in the country.

But the presence is going up significantly in England and Wales.Apart from London, there are other cities and towns that have substantial number of Muslims.

They include Blackburn in Lancashire where 29.1% population comprises Muslims. The rise would continue as Muslim population is young.

Also, immigration and asylum seekers would slightly add to the existing number. However, there is no cause for alarm, as Muslim population growth is not astonishing, and would go steady within a few years, to stabilise at around 7%, feel demographers.
